Continental has been selected as the original-equipment tyre supplier for the smart #5, the largest smart vehicle built to date. The all-electric SUV will be factory-fitted with the Continental EcoContact 7 in two sizes: 255/45 R20 and 255/40 R21 — both rated for speeds up to 240 km/h and bearing the XL marking for increased load capacity.

Why EcoContact 7 for an EV?

Continental developed the EcoContact 7 with energy efficiency at its core, which makes it a natural fit for battery-electric vehicles where range is closely tied to tyre rolling resistance. According to Continental, the tyre uses several technologies to reduce energy loss:

  • Aerodimple sidewall — a pattern of small dimples inspired by a golf ball’s surface, designed to reduce air turbulence behind the tyre as it rotates.
  • Low-friction materials — new compounds in the carcass, inner liner and sidewall reduce internal friction.
  • Energy-efficient rubber compound — adapted tread compound targeting lower rolling resistance while maintaining tyre longevity.
  • Silent tread pattern — engineered to minimise rolling noise, specifically tuned to frequencies common at around 50 km/h, where urban EVs spend most of their time.

The 255/45 R20 105 V XL FR and 255/40 R21 102 V XL FR sizes approved for the smart #5 are large-diameter, wide-profile fitments — consistent with the SUV segment’s preference for 20- and 21-inch wheels. Both carry the FR (Flange Rib) protection marking.

About the smart #5

The smart #5 is the brand’s largest model to date, positioned as a premium all-electric SUV. The OE fitment covers availability across numerous countries, according to Continental’s March 10, 2026 announcement.

This OE contract reinforces the EcoContact 7’s positioning in the EV segment for Continental. Continental, which reported tyre division sales of €13.8 billion in 2025, has increasingly focused on EV-optimised products as automakers seek range-efficient tyres for their electric lineups.

Consumer relevance

For smart #5 buyers, the factory fitment means the EcoContact 7 is a tyre specifically chosen for the vehicle, making it a strong option when replacement is needed. The tyre is a summer-type product, so owners in markets with pronounced winters will need a separate winter set. Continental has not announced retail pricing specifically for these OE sizes, but the EcoContact 7 line is widely available across European and Asian markets.
